Red Sox

The big debate in Beantown this summer seems to be which is longer: the time since the Red Sox won a World Series or the time since Johnny Damon’s last haircut. Things are getting a little hairy in Boston as we go deeper into the season. The Red Sox continued their winning ways in 2004. With Curt Schilling, should help the team make another deep postseason run and possibly earn a trip to the 2004 World Series. The team is managed by Terry Francona and has been located in Boston since 1907. They have made the playoffs 13 times and last won the World Series in 1918. Since 1912, the team has been playing its games in Fenway Park, which has a capacity of 33,993.

Terry Francona\'s Boston Red Sox were in serious trouble, well-behind in both the AL East and Wild Card races, Boston\'s favorite team was watching its hopes of a World Series ring being replaced by desperation just to reach the playoffs. Then, desperation was replaced with intensity on July 24th, when a fight broke out between Jason Variteck and Alex Rodriguez. The Sox, at one point headed towards an October watching the fall season of television, have taken that moment and are using it to push them into the biggest sports moment of the fall, the World Series.
Manny Ramirez is the team\'s offensive leader, and considered by many to be one of the best pure hitters in the game. At the end of August he was seventh in the Major Leagues in homeruns while batting with an average over .300. Manny has over 100 RBI\'s for the season, good enough for third in the American League, one spot below his teammate, David Ortiz, who is in heavy competition for the American League MVP Trophy.
Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez are a hard to beat 1-2 punch for teams to face. The Red Sox pitching staff is among the best in baseball, and the acquisition of Schilling in the lineup puts an October winner into the lineup. Curt leads the team in ERA and both the team and league in wins at the start of September, and appears to be looking in his best form since the last time he played in a World Series for Arizona.
If the Red Sox want to win the Fall Classic, they have to do the same thing Schilling\'s Diamond Backs were able to do, beat the Yankees. With Ramirez, Orton, Schilling, Martinez, and a variety of players for this team fired up, look for their aggressive play to be the focus the next time they see the Yankees, if not their aggressive fists.

Perhaps Boston can rest easier for the next few days knowing that: 1)they're headed to the playoffs via the AL wild card slot, and 2)they won't be playing the Yankees in the first round. Pedro Martinez must shake off a four-game losing streak and be ready to pitch alongside Curt Schilling, who will be sure to turn it up a notch come October. Boston's strong pitching will be a great help to a lineup that sports two 40-HR hitters in Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz. The Sox are the most dangerous squad in the American League and if they can play solid team ball, they could very easily walk away with the pennant this year.
