The outfield duo of Andruw Jones and J.D. Drew has kept hitters on lock-down with their fine play for Atlanta. Their superb play is a welcome sight for the Braves who suffered several key hits to the roster in the off-season. Javy Lopez, Greg Maddux, Gary Sheffield and Vinny Castilla all bolted in the off-season. Pitching additions John Thomson and relievers Chris Reitsma and the six-fingered Antonio Alfonseca have helped the Braves from the mound, but an ace must emerge from the rotation. The losses on offense will hurt but staples such as Andruw Jones, Rafael Furcal, Marcus Giles and Chipper Jones will keep the Braves on the road back to the post-season. The team is managed by Bobby Cox and has been located in Atlanta since 1966. The team has made the playoffs 19 times and last won the World Series in 1995. Since 1997, the team has been playing its games at Turner Field, which has a capacity of 49,000.

Several hits to the roster made the Braves look like a team more likely to be rebuilding than playing in contention at the outset of the season. Even with J.D. Drew and Andruw Jones, the team outlook after losing Gary Sheffield, Greg Maddux, Vinny Castilla, Javy Lopez, and others the team looked like it was a few years away from their dominance of the National League that was the norm of the 90\'s. Jones, Drew, Chipper Jones, and Marcus Giles were still around to provide leadership, but what would come of that was uncertain. Compared to that, September and the end of the 2004 season is looking rosy for the Braves with an 8.5 game lead over the division, Bobby Cox has the team looking towards another October.
Twenty-eight year old Jaret Wright has came out as the ace of the rotation with a 3.20 ERA and a 13-6 record, Wright provides a stability that appeared to be missing at the beginning of the year. While this rotation doesn\'t strike fear into hearts like the famed Braves past, Wright and Russ Ortiz are certainly more than capable of winning. If the pitching staff can get the team to the ninth with a lead, John Smoltz will be there to finish the game out. Fifth in the National League with thirty-five saves as September starts, Smoltz has adapted away from the starter role of the 90\'s into one of the best closer\'s in baseball.
Johnny Estrada is the team\'s leading hitter, his batting average in the top ten of the National League. Drew is the main run producer for the squad, leading the team in RBI\'s, with Chipper and Andruw Jones backing him up with solid run production. Though they\'re not among the statistically best offenses in the league, they obviously do enough to win.
This isn\'t the Atlanta Braves team of the 90\'s, that\'s obvious enough. This is a team though that is capable of piling up victories as they have over the summer. With veteran leadership spiked with youth, the team isn\'t one that can be overlooked in October. Keeping an eye on the squad will be important as they might surprise some people in the wide-open National League.

Some things in baseball never change. Atlanta winning the NL East appears to be one of them. While they lack the fear-inspiring rotation of the 90s, they can still win games, either with starters like Russ Ortiz or with closer and former starter, John Smoltz. Manager Bobby Cox has also maintained a solid lineup that has seasoned veterans and young talent. Expect Atlanta, supported by the offensive output of J.D. Drew and Chipper Jones and the gold glove of Andruw Jones to make a strong run in the postseason.
