Come out and see Barry Bonds hit some homers as the San Francisco Giants look to repeat as the NL West division champs in 2004. Despite a quite offseason, the club made one notable move was the addition of Michael Tucker from the Royals. The offense is led by Bonds, Edgardo Alfonzo and Rich Aurilia. The pitching staff is led by Jason Schmidt and Kirk Reuter. The team is managed by Felipe Alou and has been located in San Francisco since 1958. They have made the playoffs seven times. Since 2000, the team has been playing its games in Pacific Bell Park, which has a capacity of 41,059.

The excitement is growing in San Francisco, the quiet buzz of historians looking at the man who has won the NL MVP award many times over, Barry Bonds could do it. He\'s already broken Mark McGwire\'s 70 home run season shortly after McGwire broke the long-standing 61 of Roger Maris. Bonds began the season under immense public scrutiny, but now all the eyes and whispers around him are about the second record he has on the horizon, the career homerun record. The most dangerous hitter in the National League could hit his seven hundredth homerun this season, putting him within a season\'s striking distance of Hank Aaron and a thought unbreakable record.

He does it this season while leading the Giants to contention for the National League Wildcard spot. Five and a half games behind the Dodgers in the West, the Giants are eyeing potentially zooming past the Cubs who led the wildcard race by a half game at the start of September. Bonds is second in the majors and tops in the NL in batting average, and fifth in homeruns. All of this is more impressive when considering that Bonds has been walked 70 times more than anyone else in the league. He has more walks than the top two walkers in the American League combined. The offense struggles to take advantage of that, but has slowly grown to make it a more dangerous move to put Bonds on base.

Jason Schmidt doesn\'t let Bonds work fail if he can help it, with the third best ERA in the league, along with 15 wins, which is also third best in the league. Serving as staff ace, Schmidt will be crucial in any run the team makes in October to anchor this inconsistant staff that has at different times shown brilliance, but too often faltered.

While the team has taken hits for being the Barry Bonds team, if San Francisco is going to win a World Championship, it will require work from the entire team, from bottom to the top, taking advantage of Bonds unbelievable on base percentage to score runs and protect leads. Schmidt, Bonds, and the rest of the Giants will be surrounded by big expectations in the bay, but if anybody is going to produce, it\'s Barry Bonds.

There's no question that Barry Bonds is the MVP. He has almost single-handedly put the Giants where they are right now. However, this weekend against the Dodgers will be their biggest games of the season as they must win to hopefully secure a spot in an extremely tight Wild Card race. While Jason Schmidt has been their dominant ace, the rest of the rotation must find a way to win to keep this team's hopes alive. Especially in these final games, expect Barry to see few pitches he likes. The rest of the lackluster lineup, from Marquis Grissom to J.T. Snow, have to find ways to bring Barry home if the Giants hope to edge out the other Wild Card teams.
