Cardinals

The National League Central was a horserace coming into the 2004 season, with many experts saying that the Chicago Cubs would emerge the victor in the division, and possibly as the best team in the NL. Coming into August the Cubs certainly are among the elite in the National League, but they find themselves nine games back from the hottest team in the Major Leagues, the St. Louis Cardinals. The team which calls Busch Stadium its home is riding a hot streak and entered August with the best record in baseball.
Scott Rolen has been simply phenomenal this season, leading the league in runs batted in and holding a batting average in the top ten in baseball, he\'s leading a very potent offense which also contains Jim Edmonds and now perennial MVP candidate Albert Pujols, both of whom were among the top five in homers at the beginning of the month. With those and the remainder of the offensive element in the equation, the Cardinals present a difficult task to any and all pitcher in the league.
Starting pitching is the shakiest part of this Cardinals team as it tries to win its first World Series since 1982. Seven-year vet Chris Carpenter and new acquisition Jason Marquis lead the team with 11-4 records, and veteran staff member Matt Morris also has eleven wins to his credit. Jason Isringhausen is Seventh in the National League in Saves, and though at times has appeared to be weak, thanks to the high-powered offense he\'s providing enough to get the job done.
If they can overcome the pitching worries that plague the team, this St. Louis team has the offensive tools to get it done in October and show all of the experts they were looking at the wrong NL Central team at the beginning of the year.

The National League Central was a horserace coming into the 2004 season, with many experts saying that the Chicago Cubs would emerge the victor in the division, and possibly as the best team in the NL. Coming into August the Cubs certainly are among the elite in the National League, but they find themselves fifteenn games back from the best team in the Major Leagues, the St. Louis Cardinals. The team which calls Busch Stadium its home carried the best record in baseball for all of August, and enters the home stretch of the season looking ahead to October.
Scott Rolen has been simply phenomenal this season, third in the league in runs batted in and holding a batting average in the top fifteen in baseball, he\'s leading a very potent offense which also contains Jim Edmonds and now perennial MVP candidate Albert Pujols, both of whom were among the top five in homers at the beginning of the month. Pujols stepped up his game in August and leads the team in batting average, eleventh in the major leagues. With those and the remainder of the offensive element in the equation, the Cardinals present a difficult task to any and all pitcher in the league.
Starting pitching is the shakiest part of this Cardinals team as it tries to win its first World Series since 1982. Matt Morris leads the team with fourteen wins, and the rest of the staff has done their job adequately, three members of the unit have thirteen wins on their record. Jason Isringhausen had a great August, and is now fourth in the league in saves, protecting the huge leads this offense creates.

The St. Louis Cardinals enter the playoffs as the best team in the majors and hope that their performance carries over into the first round. Led by Scott Rolen and Albert Pujols, the Cards possess the best lineup seen in years. Offensive performance and several Gold Glovers have spelled success for the Cardinals. The biggest surprise for St. Louis has been their pitching, sporting four 15-game pitchers. Matt Morris, Jeff Suppan, Jason Marquis and Chris Carpenter have played beyond expectations as the Cardinals, under the guidance of Tony LaRussa, look ready to bring home their first World Series since 1982.
