Bears

June 11, 2004 at 9:48 am
The Chicago Bears have a rich history which begins with the legendary George Halas. With Hall of Famers like Walter Payton, Gale Sayers and Dick Butkus, it’s no wonder there’s such rich tradition in Chicago. In past years, Bears’ troubles are a result of injuries to key players and free agency. Brian Urlacher and Kordell Stewart must carry this team toward the glory days that made this team great.

The Chicago Bears went into last season hoping that Kordell Stewart could overcome his past problems and carry the team to success. After employing several quarterbacks last season, Rex Grossman appears to be the man to start for new coach Lovie Smith. The Bears are trying to carry over momentum from the end of last season, which they ended with a 4-2 record.

If the Bears are to succeed, it might be because of the explosive potential of the new offensive system established by Smith. The former defensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams has brought that offensive playbook with him, the same offensive style that has paid off well for both St. Louis and the Kansas City Chiefs. Grossman\'s a mostly unknown quality, but if he can develop in the system along with free agent acquisition Thomas Jones it could provide offense that Chicago hasn\'t seen in decades.

Lovie Smith\'s St. Louis defense ranked among the best in the league, and he certainly has the manpower to make that happen in Chicago as well. The team is lead on the defensive side by the unstoppable Brian Urlacher.

While this is Smith\'s first head coaching job, expectations are high in Chicago with a desire to win based upon one of the richest winning legacies in the NFL, along with some of the most rabid fans in pro sports. Chicago continues the long to rebuilding as it fights its way through a tough NFC Central. The offense, led by Rex Grossman and back Thomas Jones, is showing signs of promise with an impressive road victory in Green Bay and a close loss to Minnesota. Brian Urlacher and that Chicago D, like the offense, still play too inconsistently to be contenders in the division, this mostly due to continuing injury problems.
