Bengals

The Bengals are looking to get back to respectability under new head coach Marvin Lewis. A return to the productive days of Bob Johnson and Boomer Esiason is the franchise’s goal. The 2003 Bengals came within one win of the playoffs. Year by year, the Bengals add more prized college players than any other team in the NFL with some of the top picks in the draft. Just wait. Enough collegiate All-Americans on the same team will eventually produce a good NFL team. Look for the Bengals to break out of their slump in the near future with a trip to the postseason.

It\'s been a long time since the talk in Cincinnati has been about good football. The 2003 season changed what had become a yearly tradition, the Bengals playing the role of doormat to the remainder of the league. With a .500 record under their belt and finishing just one game out of the playoffs as division champions, the Bengals and Cincinnati are once again talking pro football.

For the playoff dreams to come true, second year quarterback Carson Palmer has to live up to the potential that was seen in him as the first pick of the draft last season. He had a year on the sidelines watching Jon Kitna bring a spark back into the organization, now its his turn to make that spark into a roaring fire. He certainly has the tools to get that done on the offense, with Rudi Johnson now the number one back after a tremendous breakout season. Chad Johnson and Peter Warrick also provide very dependable hands in the receiving corps.

With the offense in place, coach Marvin Lewis has to whip his defense into shape. The unit ranked among the bottom five teams in the NFL in yards allowed. Their offseason moves showed their urgency to improve, making seven of their eleven draft picks defensive players, and grabbing several talented defensive players in free agency.

Watching the Bengals this season will be very interesting, with the progression of the team under the guide Marvin Lewis. If Carson Palmer develops into the guy that this team believes he can, you can count on Cincinnati talking football for a long time to come.

The Bengals are starting off the year trying to get their team to click. At 1-2, they managed to hang with the New York Jets, scoring 24 in the loss, but were blown out by the Ravens, allowing 23 points and only scoring nine. Even eith the loss of Corey Dillon, the Bengals still have a talented runner in Rudi Johnson and an offense that's young and ready to turn this franchise around for the better. The defense, however, has yet to make an impressive stand this season. If the D can find ways to shut down teams, they could take an AFC North that is still very much up for grabs.
