Browns

June 11, 2004 at 11:16 am
The Browns franchise has been one of the most successful teams in the history of football. Cleveland has 11 conference championships to its name, and the team has converted eight of these into league championships. Some of the greatest players ever to play the game have worn the Cleveland Browns jersey. These gridiron greats include Jim Brown, Lou Groza and Otto Graham. With the Dog Pound, Cleveland can be intimidating. The Browns will have their turn near the top soon with as many high draft picks. Look for the Browns to be surprisingly successful in the upcoming season.

With Tim Couch no longer with the Cleveland Browns, the Quarterback carousel that had been a running storyline for several seasons has finally ended. It won\'t be Kelly Holcomb taking over the reins and continuing his run as starter in Cleveland, instead the Browns signed Jeff Garcia from the San Francisco 49ers to be the Quarterback of right now, to lead 4th year coach Butch Davis\'s team back to the playoffs.

While Garcia won\'t have All-Pro wideout Terrell Owens to throw to, he does have the son of one of the most famous tight ends in league history, Kellen Winslow II, to throw to. The rookie tight end came into the league promising to do for the Browns what rookie phenom LeBron James did for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Immediately he\'s been named among the best tight ends in professional football, and his rookie season will be watched by many to see if he lives up to his own hype.

Returning will be the 15th ranked defense in the NFL, with a few key additions. Ebenezer Ekuban and Warrick Holdman were both brought in to improve the mediocre defense built on high draft picks and standout free agent selections that has massively underachieved.

The most exciting part of the Browns possibilities this season is a better look at Lee Suggs. The running back went wild on Cincinnati in the last game of the 2003 season, and is filled with potential in many experts mind. If he\'s the starter, Browns fans expect big things.

The Browns appear to be building on something, but with Jeff Garcia aging look for them to try building on very quickly into being a contender in the next few seasons.

The Browns may have lost their big-name tight end in Kellen Winslow for the season, but on the small plus side, RB Lee Suggs is expected to return for Week 4 against the Redskins. If he plays up to the hype he created during the final game of last season, this may be what Jeff Garcia and the Brown offense desperately needs. Their defense is riddled with injuries, however, with only two original starters on their line. They give up over 100 yards in rushing and 250 in passing, which must be drastically cut if Cleveland wants to live anywhere but the cellar of the AFC North this season.
