Lions

Since 1930, the Detroit Lions have had many memorable moments. Notching 15 playoff appearances and four league championships, the Lions trophy case has filled over the years. Some of football’s greatest players have worn the Lions jersey, such as Doak Walker, Barry Sanders and Dutch Clark. The Lions look promising with the hiring of head coach Steve Mariucci. This is their greatest asset. As other teams underestimate them, the Lions will pull out some surprising victories in 2004.

If you didn\'t pay attention during the offseason, don\'t expect to recognize many parts of the Detroit Lions offense, last year\'s league worst. Back is Joey Harrington, the quarterback that has been filled with potential since becoming a Lion, yet had no one to hand off or throw the ball to. That all changes this season, with injury problems from a season ago mostly settled and possibly the best offseason in the NFL.

Starting with the receivers, Roy Williams is a highly regarded rookie, and the addition of Tai Streets, who reunites with former head coach Steve Mariucci, brings consistancy to the team that badly needs it. Charles Rogers returns as well, after playing only his first five games last season before breaking his collarbone. Harrington went from having very few targets to having almost too many.

The Lions didn\'t stop there though, signing Pro Bowl Guard Damien Woody to anchor the offensive line that will be trying to create holes for rookie halfback Kevin Jones. They then went after upgrades in the secondary to compliment the young linebacking corps. Signing Pro Bowler Brock Marion to play Free Safety and cornerback Fernando Bryant to play on the opposite side of the field as the team\'s other sensational corner, Dre Bly.

With so many young additions, the Lions have created a roster full of potential that will be fun to watch develop.

Detroit surprised everyone this offseason with acquisitions showing a management dedicated to rebuilding their team. With young talent such as RB Kevin Jones and WR Roy Williams helping out developing QB Joey Harrington, the offense is primed to be a dominant force a few years down the road. Their defense, however, has to stop giving up over 375 yards a game. Veterans like Brock Marion and Dre' Bly need to provide leadership to the younger players. If Detroit realizes the potential this team has, expect the Lions to be perennial contenders in the NFC.
