Cardinals

June 11, 2004 at 9:28 am
Since 1920, the Cardinals have made only six playoff appearances. Their last division title came in 1975 when they were known as the St. Louis Cardinals. The Arizona Cardinals could be in one of the toughest divisions in the NFL. Emmit Smith must meet this team’s desperately needed offense. The NFC West is challenging for the Cardinals. Nonetheless, this team will sneak out some wins in the division.

Dennis Green plans to usher in a high-powered passing offense, and given a few years this team has the ability to be the best passing unit in the league. Josh McCown leads the team as quarterback, throwing to one of the deepest core of young receivers in the league. Larry Fitzgerald, the third pick in the draft this season, figures to make a huge impact on the team. Joining him is last season\'s Rookie of the Year Anquan Boldin and Bryant Johnson, a threesome that will provide nightmares to defensive coordinators for many years.

The team will rely on NFL all-time rushing leader Emmitt Smith to provide a running game early on in the year while waiting Marcell Shipp\'s return from a broken leg. Smith\'s age appeared to have caught up with him last year, the Cardinals hope he has drank from a fountain of youth to provide a much needed ground attack so that pressure is taken off young McCown.

While the offense has the ability to be fun to watch, the defense looks to be nothing but dreadful this season. Particularly thin is this team\'s secondary, which provided the fourth worst pass defense in the league and didn\'t get much better in the offseason.

Step one of Dennis Green\'s plan is to revitalize this offense, and watching the transformation should be fun. Hopefully the defense can pick up and help the team win a few more games this season while the talent continues to develop.

Dennis Green probably had no idea what he was getting into when he signed on as the new coach of the Arizona Cardinals. So far, his run defense has been abysmal while the secondary has played fair. If the D-line is improved, the Cardinal defense could be a viable threat. Offensively, the receiving team of Anquan Boldin, who will miss several games due to knee surgery, Larry Fitzgerald and Bryant Johnson will be a trio that will help propel Arizona'a offense. Once Emmitt Smith hangs up his cleats and a new running back joins QB Josh McCown in the backfield, this could be the team to beat in the NFC. For now, Green and Cardinal fans must be patient, it will probably be a long year.
