Chiefs
June 10, 2004 at 10:33 am
The Chiefs have stacked up two league championships and 13 playoff appearances in their history. Players such as Len Dawson and Abner Haynes have worn the team’s colors over the years. Last season proved disappointing for the Kansas City Chiefs as they were knocked out in their first playoff game after a 9-0 start. Coming into his fourth season as the head coach, Dick Vermeil is trying to gel his team full of talent that includes Trent Green, Tony Gonzalez, Priest Holmes, and Dante Hall.

A record-setting offense, spectacular special teams and a new defensive coordinator are the things brought to the 2004 National Football League season by the Kansas City Chiefs and their rabid fans believing that one year removed from a 13-3 season, this is the team to return Kansas City to their first Superbowl since Superbowl IV.
Trent Green leads the balanced attack after attending his first Pro Bowl in February. The former backup to Kurt Warner in St. Louis put up numbers last year to make even his high-powered former employers envious. He\'s supported by Priest Holmes, coming off a season that he broke the NFL Record for most Touchdowns scored in one season. With ten of eleven starters back, the offense figures to be just as explosive this season.
The word explosive certainly can pertain to one of the smallest Pro Bowlers last season, Kick Returner Dante Hall who tied the record for most touchdown returns last season and breaking the record for consecutive games with a return touchdown, forcing teams to come up with differing strategies simply for how they kick and punt to him.
The only facet of the Chiefs game last year that needed improvement was the underachieving play of a talented defense. In order to get the best from the team, a familiar face has come back to set things in line. If Gunter Cunningham\'s second stint as defensive coordinator goes as well as his first stint with the Chiefs, there\'s nothing keeping the team from returning to the biggest game of the year.

Probably the biggest surprise of the NFL season is the performance of the Kansas City Chiefs. While many were questioning the performance of the defense and if it would play spoiler to the team, no one thought it would be the offense that would hinder them. While Priest Holmes continues to perform like Priest Holmes, the passing game has played below expectations. But the defense is still not helping the team. Allowing Houston to score 24 points at Arrowhead is not something Chiefs fans will tolerate for long. Coach Dick Vermeil has to dig his team out of a large hole if they want to see the playoffs this year. But with an approaching game in Baltimore, things aren't looking any better for Kansas City.
