Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings have been in the league since 1961, but the team has not won a league championship or Super Bowl yet. They came close by making four unsuccessful trips to the Super Bowl. Some of the greats to play in Minnesota are Fran Tarkenton, Mike Tingelhoff and Alan Page. Today, the strong arm and legs of quarterback Daunte Culpepper could prove to be a crucial component this season. High-flying wideout Randy Moss and running back Moe Williams are a deadly offensive duo.

Last season\'s Minnesota team made up for their 23rd ranked defense with the best offense in the league. Even that and a 6-0 start wasn\'t enough for Mike Tice\'s team to get over the hump and into the playoff picture, falling out with a disappointing loss in Week 17 to the Arizona Cardinals. The 3-7 collapse to end the season has to still be fresh on the mind of Minnesota players and fans, and in what will be a defining year for Coach Tice, the Vikings must step up their defense to overtake Green Bay in the NFC North.

The problems with the team certainly aren\'t the fault of the offense. Randy Moss continues to be the most spectacular wideout in the league, weekly converting plays that make jaws drop in awe. Dante Culpepper continued to improve last season, throwing twelve less interceptions last year than he had the year before. The running game is strong as always with Michael Bennett coming off a foot injury prepared to start the season running.

Gone though from this Vikings team is the Tony Dungy defense of the mid-90\'s. Gone is all stability on the defensive side of the ball, with 5 different defensive coordinators since 1999. Ted Cottrell hopes that draft choice Kenechi Udeze can create a pass rush from the defensive end position. That pass rush will be helpful in creating mistakes, one thing the Minnesota defense was good on creating last year, being among the league leaders in forcing turnovers.

The last play of the 2003 regular season sent the Vikings home with a bad taste in their mouths. If they come to play with the same offense and improvement in the defense, they should have a playoff berth wrapped up long before Week 17 this season.

This year appears to be no different for the Vikings: big offensive production, hope their defense can stop the opposition at least a few times. The Vikings can score, and how, with Daunte Culpepper (who has won NFC offensive Player of the Week twice this year) and Randy Moss again putting up exceptional numbers. While they may be losing Onterrio Smith to a substance abuse violation, they will be happy to see Michael Bennett back in the lineup, giving Minnesota yet another threat in the lineup. Defensively, the Vikings give up plenty of yards and allowed the Bears to score 22 on them in Week 3, something which must be improved on as the season progresses. This will be another high-scoring year for the Vikings, and barring another meltdown midway into the season like last year, this is a squad who should go deep in the postseason.
