Giants

June 10, 2004 at 10:57 am
Since 1926, the New York Giants have totaled 25 playoff berths and six league championships. Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor led to the Giants to victory in the past. Some of the other all-time greats include Tuffy Leeman and Y.A. Tittle. The only thing cooler than Shockey, Strahan, and Barber is that Giants Stadium is finally switching to the new artificial grass! The Giants have been just an average team for the past couple seasons. They have multiple Pro Bowl players who just haven’t gelled as a unit yet. But just wait. The NFC East could have its hands full with the Giants this season.

The disappointing 4-12 season behind them, the New York Giants sought out change possibly more than any other team in the NFL. Out the door when calm Jim Fassel, and in came dictatorial head coach Tom Coughlin. Kerry Collins went from leading the team to the Super Bowl a few years ago to being off the team in favor of Peyton Manning\'s little brother Eli and his new hopeful mentor, former Ram Kurt Warner. They picked up a variety of new starters on the offensive line, and created depth on the defensive line that had been previously non-existant.

Eli Manning has been in the NFL less than four months, yet he may already be the most scrutinized rookie ever. Refusing to go to the San Diego Chargers with the first pick in the draft, the Giants traded for him with their eyes looking straight at the success big brother Peyton has had in Indianapolis. While the Ole Miss standout isn\'t certain to save the franchise, he certainly has the family grooming to do so. He\'s learning from one of the most famous players involved in a team turnaround in league history, two-time NFL MVP Kurt Warner, who was cut by the Rams in favor of Marc Bulger. While unsure who the starter will be, it\'s certain that Manning will utilize Warner in learning everything he can about success in the NFL, and if there\'s a genetic trait that makes a quarterback win, Eli is most certainly carrying the gene.

No matter who starts, this is an offense that has some ability to create points. Tight End Jeremy Shockey is considered by many to be the best TE in the game. Amani Toomer and Ike Hilliard are definitely not slouches at the starting receiver spots either. With Tiki Barber and Ron Dayne taking on the rushing duties, this is a team that could hit or miss offensively.

The defense is widely changed, with four former defensive starters finding homes with different NFC East Teams this season. The team is still anchored on defense by Michael Strahan, holder of the single-season sack record and still possessing the ability to get after the passer. With a deeper defensive line, you can expect Strahan to have another monster season.

With change comes some growing pains, and that\'s certain to be seen this season. Watching Eli Manning grow and gel with the set offensive specialists on this team will be something to watch in order to see just how this team could look for years to come.

Kurt Warner has arrived in New York to show that the Giants aren't the cast-asides many thought them to be at the end of last season. The next few weeks against Green Bay and Dallas will test the Giants to their limits, but if WR Amani Toomer and TE Jeremy Shockey come in big for Warner, the Giants could surprise a few people. Also, with the double threat of backs Ron Dayne and Tiki Barber, this is an offensive that could be big or a bust. On defense, Michael Strahan is one of the best in the league at what he does, and if anyone can motivate a defense, it's Michael Strahan. While the future is cloudy for the Giants, they seem to have a new sense of competition missing from last year, and that could spell success for them.
