Ravens

June 11, 2004 at 11:01 am
The Baltimore Ravens started in 1996 when they moved to the east coast from Cleveland. The Ravens have won a Super Bowl with one of the NFL’s all-time greatest defenses. The Ravens’ D was hard to crack last season. The Ravens have added Mike Singletary as the linebacker’s coach to compliment the Pro Bowl linebacker Ray Lewis. The AFC North will have its hands full with Baltimore this year.

As defending AFC North Champions, the Ravens almost pulled off one of the biggest moves of the offseason, acquiring star wideout and instant impact player Terrell Owens from the 49ers, only to have the trade voided with compensation from the Eagles, putting T.O. in Philadelphia and leaving Baltimore with no answers to take pressure off of second-year QB Kyle Boller. They eventually did end up with a good receiver in Kevin Johnson via trade from the Jaguars, but Johnson isn\'t the answer to last year\'s anemic passing game.

Barring looming legal trouble, the offense will once again rest on the shoulders of the NFL Offensive Player of the Year, Jamal Lewis. Completing one of the greatest seasons in NFL history last season, Lewis will have to do a lot to top his previous performance. With Boller still developing, expect a lot of carries goingi to Lewis once more this season.

Defense was the motto for Baltimore\'s Super Bowl victory, and as last year\'s third-ranked defense, it\'s still key. They have the ability to handcuff any offense in the league, lead by hard-hitting perennial league MVP candidate, Ray Lewis.

In an offseason where there were a variety of veteran quarterbacks available, the Ravens showed full faith in Kyle Boller as their man and stuck with him as the starter. Hopefully this season that stance will pay dividends for the Ravens and they can continue their successful dominance in the AFC North.

Jamal Lewis refuses to be stopped. Even with a passing game that may not even exist in Baltimore, Lewis has rolled up his sleeves and taken the offensive load for the Ravens, creating the second-best running game in the league. Until QB Kyle Boller becomes more confident throwing to his recievers, look for more rushing from the stellar back. Defensively, Ray Lewis leads another intimidating defensive squad already with 5 INTs. If Baltimore hopes to reclaim another NFC North title, the passing game must become more developed and the defense needs to keep on doing what it has been doing for the past few years. While the latter should happen, the Ravens desperately need the former to come true as well.
