The Oakland Raiders franchise has played in both Oakland and Los Angeles. Oakland has won consistently throughout its history. Since 1960, the Raiders have won 15 division championships, four conference championships, and three Super Bowl championships. Experience is the Oakland’s greatest asset. The team proved that in their trip to the Super Bowl in 2003. But after last season’s meltdown, the Raiders and 2002 NFL MVP Rich Gannon must prove it to the critics again. Look for Oakland to have a spectacular season and to contend for the AFC Championship again.

Last season wasn\'t a pleasant one for the Raiders, who were trying to defend their AFC Championship from the year before. The offense sputtered, the defense showed its age, and a 4-12 season was the result. The team did what it did best in previous seasons though, and found the perfect group of veterans to fit the mold and hopefully improve the team back up to the famous silver and black standard.
Quarterback competition seems to be the case in Oakland\'s camp, with Rich Gannon needing to once again prove himself to be the man for the Raiders. The former NFL MVP had a horrible season before ended by injury last year and needs to rebound quickly to keep former Giants starter Kerry Collins, who has a Super Bowl appearance on his resume as well, from taking his spot with the first team.
Whoever gets the job will still be throwing to the ageless Jerry Rice. While he doesn\'t have the speed of his youth, he still has the soft hands and ability to catch anything thrown in his direction. After parting ways with longtime Raider Tim Brown, Jerry Porter will be the second receiver, bringing his speed to the starting roster will be a key to the long passing game favored by the Raiders. New head coach Norv Turner will want the ball to move up the field, and Porter\'s quick feet will be necessary to reach that goal.
The defensive moves to shore up last year\'s dismal showing were the big stories of the offseason, with longtime Tampa Bay Defensive Tackle and perennial Pro Bowler Warren Sapp coming to Oakland\'s new 3-4 defense to play defensive end, and huge Defensive Tackled Ted Washington leaves the Super Bowl Champion Patriots to shore up the middle. With those additions and the very talented Charles Woodson dominating the secondary, expect this defense to rebound from its performance that landed it among the worst five in the league.
Expectations are always high in Oakland, and this season\'s flurry of activity makes things no different. If nothing else, expect the chance to watch many great veterans play football the way it is meant to be played.

Ready to leave a 4-12 season behind them, the Raiders have started strong. However, the veteran squad was recently hindered by the loss of leader Rich Gannon. In his place is another seasoned QB in Kerry Collins. But if Collins can utilize the deep ball, the Raiders shouldn't lose much of a step. In an always rivalrous AFC West, Oakland must keep their defense running smoothly, as they have so far this year. The running game is also important to the Raiders, and Tyrone Wheatley must become a larger factor especially with Gannon out. Oakland looks more confident than last year and are ready to turn a few heads, proving that it isn't youth that wins games, but solid playing on both sides of the ball.
