The Steelers franchise started in 1933. For many years, the team couldn’t win on a consistent basis. The Steelers of the 1970s turned that around with their Steel Curtain Defense. They won four Super Bowls in the 1970s. Some of the great players include Joe Green, Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris. The Steelers are in the playoff hunt once again with their defense regaining its form. Look for rookie quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to shine on the field. Plaxico Burress and Heinz Ward will step up big this season again and post huge numbers for the offense.

Two years ago, the Steelers thought that Tommy Maddox had changed the franchise forever. Stepping out from the Kordell Stewart years, the former XFL quarterback was to usher in a high-octane passing game that would look nothing like Bill Cowher\'s previous Steelers teams. A year later and the running game proved to still be the most valuable asset the team had, and Tommy Maddox is left with this season to prove himself after the Steelers picked up Ben Roethlisberger in the first round of the draft.

Maddox isn\'t the only one looking at his starting job slipping away, Jerome Bettis\'s position with the Steelers will now be as a partner to the starting tailback, former star of the cross-state Eagles, Duce Staley. If Staley can revive the running game the The Bus did when he came into Pittsburgh, it may give Maddox a chance to find the great receiving corps, made up of Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress, and Antwaan Randle El.

While the defense ranked high last season, it wasn\'t as suffocating as the yards per game statistic appears. While ninth in least allowed yards per game, they finished fifteenth in points per game given up, and lacked anything resembling a pass rush. The only thing they had left of that pass rush, last season\'s sack leader Jason Gildon, was cut during camp. With no pass rush and very young corners, this could be a long year for the secondary in Pittsburgh.

This certainly isn\'t the same team that the Steelers have put on the field for most of the time Bill Cowher has coached here, but the change isn\'t for the better. The Steelers have chances, with talented players at the skills position, but they\'ll have to come up at their very best for a successful season.

The Steelers are looking fairly strong so far, with a solid defense ranked ninth in the league. What worries Pittsburgh is their passing game, now in the hands of rookie Ben Roethlisberger in for injured Tommy Maddox. With recievers like Hines Ward and Plaxico Burress, Roethlisberger has good support. But backs Duce Staley and Jerome Bettis must put up consistent numbers to help take pressure off the young QB if things get rough. Bill Cowher is confident in his team's ability to make a run for the AFC North. With how they're playing currently, Baltimore shouldn't get too comfortable holding that title.
