The San Diego Chargers came into the league in 1960. San Diego has watched the great teams of Don Coryell, the amazing Dan Fouts and the successful Junior Seau. Runningback LaDainian Tomlinson is the biggest thing going for the Chargers this season. The smarts of Drew Brees and new quarterback Phillip Rivers could post significant numbers for the Chargers this season. However, the defense needs to play big.

San Diego was the doormat of the NFL last season, leaving them with the distinction of having the first pick in the draft. That didn\'t play out well, as intended pick, Eli Manning threatened a season long holdout if the Chargers retained rights to him. Instead they used his value to acquire the 4th pick and second quarterback taken, Phillip Rivers from New York, also getting their 2005 first round draft pick in the exchange.
The bright spot for this team, as they hope for the development of Rivers to supplant Drew Brees and Doug Flutie as starting quarterbacks for the team, is the work of Ladainian Tomlinson. The halfback is easily among the five best in the league, and is patiently becoming a team leader. He hasn\'t given up hope in the team, instead sticking out the rebuilding, doing what Eli Manning wasn\'t willing to do with the club.
The remainder of the team is really a question mark. Can the inexperienced offensive line learn on the job quick enough that Brees, Rivers, or Flutie won\'t spend most of the season on their back? Will the defense be able to stop teams enough that Tomlinson\'s scoring ability might come in handy? Can they begin the first steps towards rebuilding a once proud franchise? Answering these questions will provide the excitement for this season in San Diego.

The expected long road to rebuilding in San Diego continues this season. As the multi-talented LaDainian Tomlinson does his part to put impressive numbers on the board, the team must continue to improve if LT is to stick around. Phillip Rivers is now the No. 2 behind QB Drew Brees. While the offense is still quite stagnant, the defense not much of an improvement, allowing over 25 points a game. Coach Marty Schottenheimer knows that rebuilding takes time, but fans may begin to get antsy if results take longer and longer to be seen.
