Titans

June 10, 2004 at 10:02 am
The Tennessee Titians began as the Houston Oilers. Despite eight division championships and two league championships, the franchise has won no Super Bowls. The great players to play for this team are Earl Campbell, Mike Munchak and Warren Moon. In 2003, the Titans came in second in the AFC South. The Titans defense is stacked again and should keep the team as a contender in the 2004 campaign.

Defending league Co-MVP Steve McNair returns to the Tennessee offense, and provides coach Jeff Fisher\'s team a way to win in almost any situation. Gone though are the dependable teammates he\'s grown with. Eddie George was released and now plays for the Cowboys. Robaire Smith left for the Texans, and Jevon Kearse is gone to Philly. The pressure is now solely on the shoulders of McNair to continue leading this team to more success, after last season\'s tough loss to eventual Super Bowl Champion New England in the playoffs.

It\'s from that Super Bowl championship team that Antowain Smith comes, the only free agent addition to the team, who hopes to take some of the workload left by Eddie George. Along with Chris Brown, the tandem hope to provide the yards left by George, who\'s been the leading rusher for the team since it came to Tennessee. The holes left by the departing defensive linemen will be filled by the high number of defensive linemen drafted this year by the team, obviously in preparation.

The Titans aren\'t the same team that they have been for the last few years, the question is if the replacements for the long tenured stars can do a respectable job, or will they just pile more onto Steve McNair\'s already burdened shoulders?

The Titans are off to a slow start, and with Steve McNair possibly missing time due to injuries, things may not be getting better soon. RB Chris Brown has turned it on and taken some of the burden off the NFL's iron man, but it hasn't helped to improve a poor passing game so far. While the Titan defense has held opponents to only 17 points a game, the offense has struggled, scoring only 15 per game. Samari Rolle and Tank Williams have done well to keep the defense going in Jevon Kearse's absence, but coach Jeff Fisher must find a way to light a spark under his offense. Steve McNair has only thrown one touchdown thus far, but if he can get in sync with receivers Derrick Mason and Drew Bennett, things look better for the Titans. In a tough AFC South, though, it won't be easy.
