Last season saw the Flames miss the playoffs once again, lengthening a streak that has now stretched to an NHL-worst seven consecutive seasons. Darryl Sutter was brought in midseason, however, and he continues to point the franchise in the right direction this season. Calgary acquired forward Steve Reinprecht and defenseman Rhet Warrener in the off-season. These two players could bolster the squad in 2003-2004. Jarome Iginla, whose play declined from its MVP-type form of two seasons ago, must repeat his 96-point performance of 2001-2002. Craig Conroy prowess on the attack is based on leadership and peskiness. On defense, the returning Robyn Regehr and Toni Lydman will be joined by 2002\\\'s Hobey Baker Award winner Jordan Leopold who is a legitimate offensive threat from the blue line. Roman Turek returns at goalie. His play continues to show the promise of a dominant goaltender.

Even with the low temperatures in Calgary this winter, the city’s hockey club has caught fire. Blazing into the playoffs, the Calgary Flames have lit the city ablaze with Stanley Cup fever and fed the fires of hope that burned in the championship season of 1989. If opponents can’t stand the heat in Calgary, they may be out of the playoffs. The Flames are notorious for their ability to fore-check and wear down opponents. They were on the winning end of perhaps the best trade of the season, acquiring goalie Miikka Kiprusoff. Kiprusoff is so hot right now under the bright lights of the post-season. On offense, the Flames hope to burn through defenses with their top sniper Jarome Iginla. Calgary is young but the fire has burned all season. This may be their year to consume the competition instead of burning out themselves.
