The Hurricanes generated a lot of excitement with their trip to the Stanley Cup finals in \\\'01-\\\'02, but it was all erased with their dismal showing last season. Head coach Paul Maurice is back nonetheless, with much the same core that lost out to the Red Wings two seasons ago. The \\\'Canes did well in the offseason, by drafting young Eric Staal and trading for former Coyotes\\\' defenseman Danny Markov and Glen Wesley. Markov and Wesley will be part of a defense that also includes Bret Hedican and Bill Boughner. On the attack, the \\\'Canes still have the ageless Ron Francis, and veterans Rod Brind\\\'Amour, Jeff O\\\'Neill and third-year man Erik Cole. Staal, the first round pick from the 2003 Entry Draft, hopefully can mature quickly and contribute as he will be with the big club at season\\\'s opening. Kevin Weekes is the incumbent number one goaltender, a steady but unimpressive backstop to a decent team.
