As the most storied franchise in hockey history, the Montreal Canadiens bring their years of tradition and twenty-three Stanley Cups to another postseason. The sentiment in Montreal hopes this year will bear another championship. Goalie Jose Theodore’s improvement of two seasons ago sparked the team’s last playoff run. His high level of play dropped off last season as the Habs were locked out of post-season play. But with a renaissance between the pipes, Theodore’s brilliance has pushed Montreal back to the playoffs. The defense has bolstered the goalie all season. Andrei Markov tallied high scoring totals and established himself as one of the best defensemen in the league. Sheldon Souray’s return from last year’s wrist injury has toughened the Montreal defense. Souray, like Markov, has emerged as a strong offensive presence, tripping his year-high totals in scoring this season as well. The offense has improved with the development of Mike Ribeiro’s puck handling and the blossoming of the talented Richard Zednick. Patrice Brisebois can get the most credit for the team’s turnaround. He notched totals right at his career averages and improved his defense. This team is definitely built to defend the tradition. Look for the Habs to continue to build on a solid foundation in this year’s race to the Cup. Bring back the glory!
