GM Mike Milbury axed Peter Laviolette in the off-season despite the former coach\\\'s success in leading the Isles to two straight postseasons. Steve Stirling was hired out of the AHL and is already being praised as a quality replacement. For the Islanders to be successful, key contributions must be made by leaders Alexei Yashin and Mike Peca. Peca was injured for a portion of last season and wasn\\\'t productive. Meanwhile, Yashin continues to underachieve for the Isles. The two must lead the offensive attack and bring the rest of the squad along. On defense, the Isles have a formidable foursome in Janne Niinamaa, Roman Hamrlik, Kenny Jonsson, and Adrian Aucoin. This season also marks the first full season where former first overall pick Rick DiPietro will be the number one goaltender. He has a lot of potential and much of the franchise\\\'s chances rest in his hands.

No man is an island, but some are Islanders. These men will determine New York’s fate in the postseason. The bulk of the load rests on the backs of the Islanders’ mobile defensemen Radek Martinek, Roman Hamrlik, and Jannie Ninimaa. Center Alexei Yashin’s level of play will also decide the length of the Isles’ playoff stint. In the early 1980s, the New York dynasty was a forge where four championship seasons were smelt. This team isn’t the dominant force it was two decades ago, but it’s scrappy. Today’s Isles tenaciously chase another Stanley Cup to add to the trophy case.
