Jacques Martin led the high-flying Senators to the best record in the NHL last season and a claim to the President’s Trophy, but the team fell in the Conference Finals to the eventual champion New Jersey Devils. Had they hung on for one more victory in that series, few would argue that they would have been hoisting the Cup a week later. This season will be one for redemption for the Sens who boast perhaps the best roster in the league. At the top skates high-scoring forward Marian Hossa who exploded last year. Hossa is a legitimate superstar. Also up front is budding star Martin Havlat; along with the dependable Daniel Alfredsson; Radek Bonk; Todd White; and newly-acquired veteran Bryan Smolinski. The blue line is just as good with the likes of Chris Phillips, Wade Redden, and Zdeno Chara suiting up for this Sens again this season. Perhaps the team’s greatest strength is the goalie Patrick Lalime. The under-appreciated net minder has won 102 games in the past 3 seasons. If he continues on this pace, all the ingredients are there for a viable run at the Stanley Cup this spring.

There’s no need for debate. The votes have been taken. Since the outset of the season, analysts, fans, and other teams agree that the Ottawa Senators are a solid hockey club that will compete for the Eastern Conference title. Though the season began with promise, the Sens entered the playoffs as a five seed, the underachievement of the year. Not surprisingly though, the postseason has awakened a sleeping giant in Canada’s capital. National defense could learn from the solid Ottawa blueliners Zdeno Chara, Greg de Vries and Chris Phillips. Canada isn’t known as an aggressive nation, but this reputation doesn’t apply to the Sens. Teams have found the Ottawa offensive attack with wingers Daniel Alfredsson and Marian Hossa to be merciless all season. The Stanley Cup is on the line. The hopes in Ottawa are for its return for the first time since 1927.
