Maple Leafs

April 8, 2004 at 11:49 am
The Maple Leafs have prematurely exited from the playoffs every year in recent memory, and last year saw it happen again when they were sent packing by the Flyers in seven games in the first round. Coach Quinn\\\'s guys will be back at it once more this season, although their time may be running short. The roster is filled with 30-something veterans who have all seen their fair share of hockey at the NHL level. Mats Sundin, the captain and the main fixture of the franchise for nearly a decade now, will lead the attack alongside other vets\\\' Owen Nolan, Alexander Mogilny, Robert Reichel, and the newly acquired Joe Nieuwendyk. The defensive corps has lost a lot of talent from last season, but returns the young Tomas Kaberle and added Bryan Marchment over the summer. Ed Belfour is the Leafs goaltender, a seemingly ageless wonder who continues to put up great seasons yet still has not won a Cup. The Leafs can boast one of the best offenses in the league, and if they stay healthy they will finish well in the East. They will have to prove themselves in the playoffs, however, to please their fan base and return the franchise to the glory days of old.

Though many of the team’s veterans are in the autumn and winter of their careers, the Toronto Maple Leafs will sooner dazzle the eye than fall in this postseason. Father Time has been good to Toronto where prized playoff experience and great offensive potency abound with Brian Leetch, Ron Francis, Mats Sundin, Alexander Mogilny, Owen Nolan and Gary Roberts on the ice. If Eddie Belfour’s back stays healthy, the Leafs will be carrying the Stanley Cup back to Canada’s largest city. There’s a rustling in the trees north of the border. It’s playoff time.
