The Capitals are working toward rebuilding. Until recently the high-priced, unsuccessful Jaromir Jagr stood in the team\\\'s path. The Caps finished cleaning house with Jagr becoming Ranger in January 2004. With the departure of Jagr, the Caps look to fight their way out of the NHL cellar. Robert Lang and Michael Nylander will carry the team. The biggest questions for the Caps lie along the blue line. They return experience only in Sergei Gonchar and Brendan Witt. Steve Eminger, a first-round pick from a year ago, could prove to be the answer on defense. The return of Olaf Kolzig in net remains perhaps the only sure thing for the Capitals in 2003-2004.
